A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
