Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
