Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
