Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
