Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
