Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
